The Golden State Warriors still have roster spots open, and one notable area that could use some help is the five.
Right now, it’s just Kevon Looney and James Wiseman. However, adding another traditional center wouldn’t make much sense. When you think of the potential center in question, Dwight Howard is the first name that comes to mind.
The Golden State Warriors may look to add a veteran center to round out their frontcourt, but for what they’re looking for, it really wouldn’t make much sense.
There are other similar talents still on the board, but the Warriors will be more likely to target another backcourt player instead.
Simply put, there shouldn’t be any minutes for anyone other than Wiseman or Looney, and when there are minutes, it will likely be JaMychal Green playing a stretch-four role.
Wiseman needs to eat up any minutes a veteran may see. He missed all of last season with a knee injury, and after looking like a solid option in the 2K23 Summer League, it’s time Wiseman shows his potential.
The third-year center averaged 21.4 minutes per game as a rookie. It felt as if he was forced some of those minutes as well with all the excitement around him being the No. 2 overall pick. Wiseman also started 27 games. Wiseman should see between 20-24 minutes per game.
Looney, on the other hand, is coming off one of the best seasons of his career. He averaged 6 points per game and played a career-high 21.1 minutes per game, seeing time in all 82 games. He turned into an ironman after missing 83 games in the seasons prior.
The combination of the two should be enough to hold down 40 of the 48 minutes, at least. As noted, Green, who is theoretically taking the spot of Otto Porter Jr., will also get minutes at the five, and he should be able to see anything left over.
Put them all together, and there just really wouldn’t be many minutes for a veteran looking to actually get some run. While it’s a smart thought, it seems the Dubs should be set at the five moving forward.
