Warriors position battle: Kevon Looney vs. James Wiseman
The 21-year-old James Wiseman was force-fed minutes when he was a rookie. Wiseman then missed all of last season with a knee injury and has since returned, playing a few games in the 2K23 Las Vegas Summer League.
As a rookie, Wiseman shot over 50% from the field and even started 27 games. He averaged 11.5 points per game as well. He’s expected to commence the season as the backup center, but there’s certainly room for him to grow in his position, even without leaping Looney as the starter.
Wiseman provides better rim protection and a greater lob threat. However, Looney is undoubtedly better at defending guards and crashing the rim. He also has the experience with the starters. Looney played a career-high 21.1 minutes per game this past season.
Wiseman likely gives the Warriors’ starting group a higher ceiling, but Looney is going to be the more sound and consistent player, especially right out of the gate. He’ll be the starter, and that likely won’t change.
However, if there’s a position where a player can earn a starting role on this team, it’s at center. Wiseman needs to prove himself, and it won’t happen out the gate, but it is a possibility as the season progresses.
