Team to eye for Warriors trade: San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are already commencing their rebuilding process.

While Keldon Johnson could make tanking easier said than done, the trading of star guard Dejounte Murray to fit his timeline as opposed to the Spurs’ timeline is all that needed to be done to showcase their intentions.

The Spurs have had great success with both international players and big men, making Wembanyama the perfect prospect. It seems clear they’re set for a rough season which could make their veterans on guaranteed contracts either available or late-season buyout options.

Doug McDermott would be too pricey and not make sense, but 26-year-old center Jakob Poeltl may give the Warriors a great second option in the event James Wiseman or Kevon Looney suffers an injury.

Zach Collins, whose deal isn’t fully guaranteed next season, would also make sense to add frontcourt depth for Golden State.

Nonetheless, moving Murray and extending Johnson makes their plan clear, and it’s to get Wembanyama. In doing so, it’ll open up their veterans to either be traded or sign elsewhere, and the Warriors should keep an eye on San Antonio for that reason.
