The Golden State Warriors lost Gary Payton II to the Portland Trail Blazers. For the first few days, the exodus of. a fan-favorite guard should have stung a bit, and it seemed like the team was torn up about it internally.

However, as the Warriors look into the future, it could bode well as Moses Moody will get more opportunities to shine. Moody was the 14th pick of the 2021 NBA Draft and played a role in the rotation for much of last season.

The Golden State Warriors will look towards the future to fill out their rotation this season, and that should mean increased minutes for Moses Moody.

Moody didn’t crack the eight-man playoff rotation, but that was to be expected, especially as a rookie. Moody did play in two 2K23 Summer League games and averaged 27.5 points per game, the most in the tournament.

As for his rookie season, Moody played in 52 games, starting 11. He averaged 4.4 points per game. While that doesn’t seem impressive, he averaged just 11.7 minutes per game, so it’s better to look at his 13.5 minutes per 36 minutes to see his impact.

Moody is also a terrific defender which seems to be an attribute head coach Steve Kerr values.

Playing the two, Moody stands 6-foot-6, so he offers good size as well. On top of being solid defensively, he averaged .8 triples per game and shot 36.4% from deep. Those numbers, primarily his minutes, should skyrocket this upcoming season.

Payton II acted as the backup two after exploding onto the scene and took many of those minutes as the Dubs looked to compete for a top-three spot in the West. They’ll again be in that position, but it should be Moody as the main backup option.

Moody showcased an improved creating ability at summer league, getting to the line double-digit times. He also hit 2.5 triples per game during his mere two games. Both of those will be something Kerr looks towards for the second unit this coming season.
