There are some potential downsides to extending Jordan Poole.

Defensive limitations

If Jordan Poole isn’t rolling on offense, his purpose on the floor disappears.

We saw this already in the 2022 NBA Playoffs as his defensive limitations make him a poor option in games where he isn’t scoring or creating plays for others.

Poole is a frail, lanky guard who hasn’t shown much tenacity on defense. He has potential as an off-ball defender but is routinely picked on by smarter offensive teams.

This glaring limitation is one that will hold him back from commanding a max contract.

Can he lead in the future?

The other question the Warriors should be asking is, is Poole capable of leading the future of this franchise?

Golden State’s big three may have just won a championship but they will be slowing down, eventually.

Is Poole the guy they trust to carry the next generation with a max contract? Poole is a great scorer and blooming playmaker. But is he a leader?

It might not come down to this. Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman or even Moses Moody could succeed Poole at some point.

When discussing Poole’s current extension, this is something to keep in mind.
