Stephen Curry not ranked as NBA’s best point guard
The Golden State Warriors won the 2022 NBA Finals almost solely on the back of two-time MVP Stephen Curry, who was awarded his first NBA Finals MVP.
While the accolades have piled up, the offseason is coming more towards the days without news and hot takes are starting to surface, one of which mentioned Curry. One popular site, HoopsHype, doesn’t think Curry is the league’s best point guard.
Stephen Curry is on top of the league for the fourth time at 34 years old, and while he’s among the best in the NBA, is he the world’s preeminent point guard?
The NBA is littered with top-tier talent at the one, and Curry, despite being 34 years old, is still among the best. Now, unlike their rankings of Klay Thompson (placing him 13th among shooting guards), Curry being second on the list of point guards actually does make sense.
Especially considering his age, the throne is up for grabs, and Frank Urbina, who created the list, has Dallas Mavericks’ superstar Luka Doncic atop the list. No one should really complain about Doncic and Curry No. 1 and 2 respectively.
Ja Morant, Trae Young and Damian Lillard round out the top five in that order, leaving room for arguments surrounding all three guards to be had, especially given Young’s weaknesses on the defensive end.
As for Curry, the 6-foot-2 8-time All-Star guard averaged 32 points per game during the 2020-2021 season, the most in the NBA.
His Warriors missed the playoffs, and the star guard knew his organization was going to get back on that stage when they were able to get to full strength (missing Klay Thompson for the entirety of that season).
That they did, and Curry was critically important in their success.
Last season, he averaged 25.5 points and 6.3 assists per game. Curry is both an underrated rebounder and defender as well. He is a complete guard, one reason Golden State has found such success with him leading the way.
Against the league’s best defense, Curry took his game to a new level. During the 6-game NBA Finals, Curry averaged 31.2 points per game and shot 48% from the field. Chef Curry cooked it up, also knocking down 5.2 triples per game.
Doncic did have equally impressive performances, but it was Curry’s Warriors which eliminated both Boston in the Finals and Dallas in the NBA Western Conference Finals. Curry is elite, and at 34, he’s still a top-two point guard in the league.
