Golden State Warriors’ top secret weapon to keep an eye on
By Tony Pesta
The Golden State Warriors have a super secret weapon on the roster. A guy who through his energy and sheer surprise could become an instant fan favorite with the Dubs.
Enter Mac McClung.
McClung went viral for his high-flying dunks. At only 6’2″, Mac can get well above the rim and finish some spectacular plays.
He was a high school sensation whose collegiate career went slightly under the radar.
McClung played two years in Georgetown, averaging 14.2 points per game before transferring to Texas Tech where he posted 15.5 points.
After going undrafted, McClung joined the Chicago Bulls where he made a brief, three-minute appearance in December.
Later in the 2021-22 NBA season, McClung was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers, playing 21 minutes in the final game of the year. He scored 6 points in an overtime win.
Mac McClung has had a bumpy career but he could find a home with the Golden State Warriors in the 2022-23 NBA season.
McClung brings athleticism, energy and excitement to the table. His dunking ability alone is enough to make him a fan favorite but his eagerness to find a home could turn him into a genuine contributor.
Right away, a comparison to Gary Payton II is warranted. With similar builds and skill sets, McClung has an obvious path to success laid in front of him by GP2.
It will take some improvements defensively and a willingness to learn behind Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson. But, it’s possible.
Take smart shots, move off-ball, find the Splash Brothers for easy looks and most of all, pour everything you’ve got into defense.
Assuming McClung remains on the roster, he will undoubtedly have a few opportunities to prove himself.
Making the most of each night on the floor and slowly but surely gaining fan support could help McClung be a viral sensation once again.
