Golden State Warriors: 3 Takeaways from opening night
By Abhay Bethur
The Offense
For the last 3 seasons now, the Warriors’ offense has not finished top 15 even a single time. They’ve had a top 5 defense for the last 2 seasons now, due to in large part Draymond Green, but the offense has been lacking.
Typically the Dubs’ offense has been very good with Steph on the court but when he leaves they struggle. This season, they might have the best offensive personnel they’ve had since the last KD season, 2018-19.
Besides the starting lineup which, we all know what they can do on offense, the bench has vastly improved on that end this season. Poole is obvious, his offensive bloom has raised the floor of the second unit and he’s continuing to get better.
Donte DiVincenzo has shined as a distributor and as a ball handler and the offense runs smoothly when the ball is in his or Poole’s hands. Wiseman adds a dimension to the offense they didn’t have last season and that’s the ability to finish at the rim.
Looney is a fantastic center, but the raw tangibles of Wiseman are something that Looney simply can not match. Jamychal Green is a very stable player, capable of playing in multiple lineups, especially if that 3-ball is falling. Moses Moody, who bizarrely didn’t get much run today, is the glue to most of these lineups sticking together, with his capable defense and his shooting.
The defense looks like it will remain elite. It has consistently been under Draymond Green. If the offense can get consistent, especially in the minutes that Steph doesn’t play the Warriors are headed for a lot of regular-season wins.
