Golden State Warriors: rollercoaster win is great learning moment
In the Golden State Warriors rollercoaster ride of a win against the Sacramento Kings Sunday night there was no shortage of learning moments for the young core that the Warriors have been preparing for the last few years.
The fourth quarter was almost entirely made up of Jordan Poole, Moses Moody, Jonathan Kuminga, and James Wiseman. Ryan Rollins even made an appearance halfway through the quarter.
There were plenty of mistakes made along the way for the Golden State Warriors despite their 130-125 win over the Sacramento Kings.
In that final quarter, the young dubs made plenty of errors on both ends of the basketball. from poorly placed passes to over-helping, it allowed the Kings to storm back into the game and forced Steve Kerr to put the starters back in the game.
There were a few plays down the stretch where James Wiseman would be in the dunkers’ spot and the ball handler, Jordan Poole and Moses Moody, misread the play and either threw a bad lob or the exact opposite and should have thrown a lob.
Both of these plays led to turnovers for the Warriors as they continued to let Keegan Murray and De’Aaron Fox make play after play.
James Wiseman overcommitted to helping on defense numerous times and allowed multiple passes in the paint to his man when there was already plenty of defense to bother the shot. This happened a few times throughout the game.
These plays sometimes even resulted in a foul by the big man.
There were also multiple times when the young players would miss a rotation and leave Kevin Huerter or Keegan Murray wide open in the corner for three.
The Young Warriors showed growth throughout the game.
James Wiseman had a game that was 90% good and even showed growth in the areas listed above as the game progressed, especially on the defensive end.
Wiseman also dropped 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists on only 7 shots, definitely contributing to the win as he busted out the floater and constantly found holes in the defense.
Jordan Poole continued to look more and more like a young Stephen Curry as he developed chemistry with the rest of the roster and moved off the ball and helped create great looks for himself and others.
Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga also continue to stay ready for their moments as Moody is becoming more of a regular part of the rotation as a 3-and-D option and Kuminga is looking to find a rhythm for this season.
The only thing Warriors fans may be left craving in terms of young player development is Patrick Baldwin Jr who still has yet to make his NBA debut.
Though the game may not have ended the way most fans wanted it to, the long-term benefits of the young players making their mistakes and seeing how they change the outcome of the game are invaluable.
James Wiseman in particular will grow much more as a result of this game as Draymond Green and Steve Kerr pulled him aside to teach him where he made mistakes and how to fix them in the future.
