“Everybody’s going to get a chance” – Kerr signals change after embarrassing Warriors loss
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has signaled major rotational change is ahead after the Orlando Magic dealt them their fourth straight loss on Thursday.
The Warriors led by 16 points early in the third quarter, but the Magic’s 77 second-half points catapulted them to an unlikely win. In a rather embarrassing start to their championship defense, Golden State have slipped to 3-6 and 12th in the Western Conference.
The Golden State Warriors lack of defensive cohesion was again evident as they gave up 130 points in a one-point loss to the Orlando Magic.
Orlando shot 53.8% from the field, 43.3% from three-point range, and went to the free-throw line a staggering 46 times against a Warriors defense that Kerr labelled as having a ‘championship hangover’.
Kerr hinted at rotations changes in his post-game press conference, with any and every idea seemingly on the table as the Warriors search to find a groove.
"“Everybody’s going to get a chance to play. We’ve got guys who are dying to get on the floor. We’ve got to find combinations that click, so we’ll discuss that as a staff and figure that out.”"
Golden State will be sweating on the return of backup guard Donte DiVincenzo, with the team going 2-1 in his three full games before a hamstring injury. Jonathan Kuminga’s absence from the rotation has been a major talking point over the past week, but the Warriors struggles mean he’ll surely have to be reintroduced at some point shortly.
Outside of DiVincenzo and Kuminga, Kerr has little in the way of roster alternatives — anything Andre Iguodala offers would be a bonus rather than an expectation, while Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins are highly unlikely to contribute in their rookie seasons.
As he referenced in the interview, Kerr is now forced to grapple with different lineup combinations — there’s no obvious panacea that can come in and relieve Golden State of their issues. The team has a number of players out of form, but many of those individuals issues are heightened by who they’re playing alongside. Of all the issues they’re currently facing, that might be Kerr’s most important to address.
