Golden State Warriors: Positive news for Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins, further absence for young duo
The Golden State Warriors’ five-game winning streak may have come to an end against the Detroit Pistons, but the reigning champions did get some more positive news on the injury front earlier in the day.
Reinforcements are soon on the way for what looked at times like a weary Warriors outfit on Wednesday night, with All-Star pair Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins set to return over the next ten days.
While the news is positive for Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins, youngsters James Wiseman and Jonathan Kuminga will miss at least one more week for the Golden State Warriors.
Wiggins has returned to the team after missing a period with illness, having previously been recovering from an adductor strain. He’s now missed a month and 15 games in total, with the Warriors 7-8 in his absence. While he didn’t make any guarantees, head coach Steve Kerr is hopeful of a return for the 27-year-old against the Orlando Magic on Saturday.
Curry is currently recovering from the shoulder injury he sustained against the Indiana Pacers on December 15, but Kerr confirmed the franchise and two-time MVP is targeting a return against the San Antonio Spurs on January 13.
The news isn’t so good for recent lottery picks James Wiseman and Jonathan Kuminga. The number two overall pick in the 2020 draft, Wiseman suffered an ankle sprain at a 3-on-3 practice last week. While the injury wasn’t believed to be serious, he’ll now miss at least two more games and a minimum of four in total. Kuminga will also miss at least two more games after a foot sprain sustained in Friday’s win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
JaMychal Green rounds out the extensive Warriors injury list, with the 32-year-old still having some work to do following Covid and a leg infection since the December 18 victory in Toronto. It means that Kerr has been limited to a nine-man rotation over the last two games, with that including meaningful minutes for rookie Patrick Baldwin Jr.
Although Wednesday’s loss was a disappointing and unfortunate result, Golden State remain primed to attack the second-half of the season with improved confidence and the return of arguably their best two players.
