Golden State Warriors’ Jordan Poole is having an up-and-down shooting season thus far in 2022-23, with his 30.5% from beyond the arc anchored down by one very odd but specific aspect.

The fourth-year guard simply cannot buy a three-point bucket from the left or right corner — he’s shooting 13.9% on corner threes after 40 games. That’s an extremely strange fact that’s leading to his worst overall three-point percentage since his rookie season.

Is Jordan Poole’s corner three-point shooting simply an outlier, or is it a genuine concern for he and the Golden State Warriors?

Poole is yet to make a right corner three on 14 attempts this season. His 5-for-22 (22.7%) from the left is a little better, but it’s certainly not at the level you’d expect from a player with his calibre of shooting. This may be a season long trend for the 23-year-old, but it certainly doesn’t extend beyond that — Poole shot 35.5% on corner threes last season, 60% in 2020-21, and 36.7% in his rookie season.

It’s certainly a bizarre element for Poole — while the frequency of corner attempts is always going to be low for a lead ball-handler like himself, any attempts should still be an opportunity for him to raise his overall three-point percentage. Instead, it’s proving to be a major issue.

Poole is an understudy to the greatest shooter of all-time in Stephen Curry. Although the two-time MVP is hardly known for his corner threes, he’s made 48.2% of his attempts from there across his career — positively impacting his overall 42.8% shooting from beyond the arc.

Part of the issue might be the lack of rhythm that Poole has on catch-and-shoot three-point attempts. He’s just 32.6% on those this season, compared to 39.3% on threes attempted after seven or more dribbles.

The 23-year-old has proved himself a tough shot maker, particularly in big moments during last year’s postseason. But if he wants to reach his sky-high potential in this league, then he simply must start doing the easier aspects, like corner three-point shooting, at a more efficient rate than what he currently is.
