The Golden State Warriors have officially hit the halfway point of the season, and it’s fair to say few expected the reigning champions to hold a losing record and sit just eighth in the Western Conference.

A lack of bench production plagued the Warriors’ first 20 games, with injury issues now arising over the last month or so. A five-game winning streak hinted at some serious momentum for Golden State, but an immediate three-game skid now has them under pressure again.

Despite an underwhelming 20-21 record through the 2022-23 season to date, the Golden State Warriors have still drawn a surprising pass mark from head coach Steve Kerr.

Speaking on 95.7’s Damon and Ratto on Wednesday, Kerr has given his team a ‘C’ for their first-half of the season.

"“C. We haven’t been good enough but we’re passing the class because we’re still right in the thick of everything playoff wise. It’s not good enough obviously, our guys know that, our staff know that. We do feel really good about our path ahead and where we’re heading, but we’ve got to do better.”"

Kerr’s right to a degree, but surely evaluations should be made on the sole performance of the team rather than a comparison to others? If that were the case, then Golden State would have to be assessed a ‘D’ on their performances thus far. The fact they’re in the ‘thick of everything’ is little solace when they were widely expected to be a top four seed at minimum by this point.

At the end of the day, the four-time championship winning coach knows it’s about the final Western Conference standings rather than the record itself. It feels like there’s a quiet confidence about Kerr and his team, so long as they finish as a top six seed and outside the play-in tournament.

Buoyed by the return of superstar Stephen Curry, the Warriors will aim to re-establish some momentum as they prepare for a five-game road-trip. That starts with a clash against the San Antonio Spurs at the Alamodome on Friday.
