The Golden State Warriors visited the White House in Washington on Tuesday, with the reigning NBA champions warmly welcomed by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Although they’ve won four of the last eight NBA championships, it’d been a while since the Warriors were at the White House. The team and former President Donald Trump were mutually uninterested in celebrating the 2017 and 2018 championships at the White House.

The Golden State Warriors championship celebration at the White House went smoothly, aside from an awkward moment when President Joe Biden forgot Klay Thompson’s name.

Golden State were initially welcomed by Vice President Harris — a native of Oakland and proud Warrior fan herself. President Biden and two-time MVP Stephen Curry then entered the stage area together, before Biden begun a celebratory speech on the Warriors’ success.

Everything was incredibly complimentary until the President awkwardly forgot Klay Thompson’s name when identifying the trio of Thompson, Curry and Draymond Green. He proceeded to turn to the four-time champion and congratulate him on his comeback from two major injuries.

Perhaps Thompson can utilize the President’s comments (or lack thereof) as motivation going forward, not that he needs it given his recent stretch of good form. The 32-year-old is averaging 31 points in his last six games — seventh in the league over the same time period.

As for Biden, he proclaimed that “The Golden State Warriors are always welcome in this White House”, and that they “reflect America” with “constant motion, individual freedom and personality that comes together as one team, a team that plays with joy, with drive to be their best.”

Curry and the Warriors presented Biden and Harris with a jersey each to conclude the ceremony, and they’ll undoubtedly be hoping to return at a similar point next year with another championship in their back pocket.
