3 Players who starred in Golden State Warriors’ upset win
By Kayson Lee
The Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers without four of their biggest stars on Friday. It truly was a win not many expected, particularly considering the Cavaliers were nearly at full strength minus Donovan Mitchell.
Without Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole and company were able to get the job done. We know in games like this, Poole has the opportunity to cook and he did just that with 32 points in the six-point win.
The Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 120-114 to get their second road win on a back-to-back this season.
Aside from Poole, let’s take a look at three players that really stood out in this game and made for one of the best wins of the Warriors season to date.
Kevon Looney
Looney may have stood out more than any other player beside Poole, and for good reason. He had his best rebounding game of the season, finishing with 17 in a might performance against two great rebounding big men in Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Looney was three rebounds shy of tying his career-high in a game.
Looney had six offensive rebounds as well, which was three more than the next-best of both teams. However, his passing out of the post also stood out with four assists. He hit the open cutter a few times which helped easy buckets to maintain their big lead. Looney played his tail off on Friday, perhaps even more impressive given he was bumped from the starting lineup the day before.
Ty Jerome
Jerome was in street clothes against the Boston Celtics on Thursday, with Golden State trying to preserve his 50-game limit on a two-way contract. He had himself a game against the Cavaliers though, finishing with 22 points and eight assists with just one turnover.
Jerome had one of the more lethal shots in the game as it seemed like his floater kept going in time and time again. He was by far one of the biggest reasons the Warriors were able to win this game, and he ensured victory with a massive fading three in the closing minutes. The 25-year-old is a hooper and he reminded the front office that they still have a decision to make with his future.
Donte DiVincenzo
DiVincenzo had a great game against the San Antonio Spurs in the Alamodome last week, and this game felt very similar. He played one of the best all-around games on the court, with his defense matching the offensive output as well.
The 25-year-old is always a hard worker on the defensive end, with varying results at times this season. Against the Cavaliers, DiVincenzo finished with four steals and often guarded Darius Garland, a big reason the Cavaliers star went 10-for-25 in the game. He also had three triples on his way to 17 points, also tallying six rebounds and four assists. The 25-year-old has struggled shooting the ball since his great outing against the Spurs, but it would appear DiVincenzo is back on track.
