Golden State Warriors trade talks hit “dead end” with Western rival
Those holding hoping that the Golden State Warriors will trade for San Antonio Spurs’ big man Jakob Poeltl may be left disappointed, with a report stating that trade talks between both teams have a hit a “dead end”.
Poeltl has long been a name to monitor for the Warriors given their need for greater frontcourt depth. The Austrian is commonly viewed as the best center that could be available ahead of the February 9 trade deadline.
The chances of Jakob Poeltl joining the Golden State Warriors appears slim with the franchise unwilling to meet the San Antonio Spurs’ demands.
Spurs Talks’ LJ Ellis reports that there are a number of teams targeting Poeltl, although Golden State are close to exiting the race given San Antonio’s desire for two first-round picks.
"“According to a source who works for an NBA agent, talks between the Spurs and the Golden State Warriors have hit a dead end. The Spurs aren’t interested in James Wiseman or Jonathan Kuminga, so a trade with the Warriors involving Poeltl is very unlikely.”"
Poeltl has averaged 12.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 blocks in 37 games this season. The 27-year-old is making just $9.4 million in 2022-23, however he becomes a free agent in the offseason and will likely seek a deal in the range of a four-year, $80 million contract.
According to Ellis, teams vying for Poeltl include his former team in the Toronto Raptors, and the Warriors’ Finals opponent in the Boston Celtics. Others interested include Western Conference rivals the New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.
Player movement is starting to heat up ahead of the deadline with the Lakers making a move for Washington Wizards forward Rui Hachimura. Los Angeles are sending guard Kendrick Nunn and three second-round picks for the former top ten pick.
Whether the Warriors are involved in any deals is the million dollar question, with the reigning champions struggling to a 23-24 record and currently tenth in the Western Conference. For now, it appears any deal won’t be involving Poeltl.
