Golden State Warriors’ superstar Stephen Curry has earnt in his ninth All-Star nod in his decorated 14-year career, with the two-time MVP again named a starter in the Western Conference backcourt.

Curry is yet to come off the bench in an All-Star game, demonstrating his consistent brilliance on the floor combined with his extraordinary fanfare across the world. The 34-year-old is joined by Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Zion Williamson and Nikola Jokic as West starters.

Stephen Curry has unsurprisingly been named an All-Star again, but the absence of a Golden State Warriors’ teammate would see the franchise join a rare group.

While Curry will represent the Warriors yet again, the team’s disappointing season to date means it’s unlikely they’ll get a second player named as a reserve. If that’s the case, Golden State will join the San Antonio Spurs as the only two teams in the past 11 seasons to have one solitary All-Star in a post-championship season.

For example, last year the Milwaukee Bucks had Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, in 2021 the reigning champion Los Angeles Lakers had James and Anthony Davis, and in 2020 the Toronto Raptors had Pascal Siakam and Kyle Lowry.

The 2015 Spurs team are currently the only team since 2013 to have one All-Star (Tim Duncan) the year after a championship. To be fair to San Antonio, they were an extremely balanced squad who still held an imposing 34-19 record before the 2015 All-Star break.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the Warriors whose likely absence of a second All-Star will simply boil down to their poor form — Golden State have a 24-24 record and sit eighth in the West. Having a second All-Star would be the furthest thing from the minds of anyone and everyone with an interest in the Warriors, with a push towards another championship the unanimous focus.

Curry will look to repeat his heroics of last year’s All-Star game in which he made an absurd 16 threes en route to 50 points and the Kobe Bryant MVP award. This year’s edition will take place at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City on February 19.
