The Golden State Warriors have announced that Ryan Rollins will undergo surgery on a foot injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for the remainder of the 2022-23 season.

The 20-year-old guard has appeared in 31 games this season — limited and largely garbage time minutes in 12 games for Golden State, along with 19 appearances for their G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Ryan Rollins’ foot surgery ends an indifferent but very much predictable rookie season for the Golden State Warriors’ 44th overall pick in last year’s draft.

Drafted out of Toledo with a second-round pick, Rollins was always unlikely to make an impact to the on-court performance of the reigning NBA champions. While there was ultimately little to be learn from his NBA experience, the 6’4″ guard did show impressive flashes with Santa Cruz.

He averaged nearly 20 points per game in the G League, doing so with efficient shooting percentages of 50% from the floor and over 36% from three-point range. With a capable outside shot and a slick handle that allows him to break into the paint, there’s enough there to suggest Rollins may have an NBA future. Whether that’s with Golden State or not is a different question entirely.

Rollins’ presence on the roster has been a growing debate as the Warriors’ underwhelming season has progressed. That’s nothing against him personally, it’s just many were and are questioning the front office’s decision to add two more draft picks to four players already on rookie contracts. That issue was and has only been amplified by the inactive nature of Andre Iguodala’s season, which is hardly a surprise, along with leaving the 15th roster spot open.

Next. Trading Wiseman and/or Moody wouldn’t be fatal to Golden State Warriors’ two-timeline aim. dark

With the strong recent form of veteran JaMychal Green, Rollins may now be first in line to be waived if Golden State want to open another roster spot. If that doesn’t eventuate, Summer League and training camp will be a big indicator of how he fits with the franchise moving forward.
