Golden State Warriors to be represented at All-Star weekend after all
With Stephen Curry’s latest injury expected to sideline him from the 2023 All-Star game, it appeared the Golden State Warriors were going to be without a representative at the NBA’s festivities next weekend.
Exciting second-year forward Jonathan Kuminga was a bemusing omission from the squads for the NBA’s Rising Stars Challenge, but fortunately for Warrior fans, another Golden State youngster will be on show at the three-day event.
The Golden State Warriors’ 55th pick in last year’s draft, Gui Santos, will take part in the G League’s ‘Next Up’ game at All-Star weekend in Salt Lake City.
The game is scheduled to take place prior to the NBA All-Star game at 3pm ET on Sunday February 19. Santos is one of 24 players selected to participate, with a draft to be held February 14 where captains Luka Garza and Scott Henderson will pick their respective teams.
Santos was taken with the Warriors’ final pick in last year’s draft, though he was not signed to Golden State’s main roster nor a two-way contract. Rather than returning to his native Brazil or another international competition, the 20-year-old signed with the Warriors G League affiliate for a year of closely monitored development.
Santos is averaging 12.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 25.5 minutes across 13 regular season games. He’s shooting at 47.9% from the field and 32.1% from three-point range, and a remarkable 93.3%
With a balanced offensive game and standing at 6’7″, Santos has undoubted NBA potential. Warrior fans will be able to witness that at All-Star weekend, with the forward one of 14 players selected who isn’t on a two-way contract with an NBA team.
Providing he has a solid Summer League and training camp, Santos could well put himself in the frame for a two-way contract next season — that appears the next logical step for this youngster’s budding career.
