Golden State Warriors’ forward questionable for Wizards matchup
The Golden State Warriors are already hit by injury with the absence of their best player and two-time MVP Stephen Curry, but they could be further weakened by the loss of another starter for Monday’s matchup with the Washington Wizards at Chase Center.
Andrew Wiggins is officially listed as questionable on the injury report, with last year’s All-Star having tweaked his ankle during the second-half of Saturday’s 109-103 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Back-to-back games against the Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers will determine how the Golden State Warriors feel heading into the All-Star break.
The Warriors will need Wiggins and Klay Thompson to bounce back from poor performances against the Lakers. The pair failed to score during a rough fourth-quarter and combined for just 27 points on 10-for-34 shooting in a disastrous overall scoring display from the reigning champions.
Wiggins’ ankle injury is the latest issue in what’s been his most injury-plagued season across an nine-year career in the league. He missed 15 straight games from early December to early January due to an adductor strain and illness.
After an impressive start to the season that followed the best year of his career in 2021-22, Wiggins hasn’t been the same since returning from injury. Golden State will need the 27-year-old to return to somewhere near his best form to even make the playoffs, let alone win back-to-back championships.
The newly acquired Gary Payton II is listed out as the Warriors continue to evaluate his health, and veteran Andre Iguodala continues to be absent with hip soreness. Wizards’ forward Kyle Kuzma is also questionable with an ankle sprain, while Washington orchestrated a buyout with Will Barton over the weekend.
The Wizards have actually gathered some momentum over the last month, going 8-3 in their last 11 games to catapult themselves back into the playoff mix. They hold a 26-29 record and are ninth in the Eastern Conference, with Golden State holding the corresponding position in the West. The Warriors claimed a 127-118 win in the teams’ first matchup of the season in Washington last month.
