2023 All-Star Game shows Stephen Curry’s record may never be broken
Another All-Star Game has come and gone with some high-flying, a lot of long distance shooting, and very little defense. For Golden State Warriors fans, it was hardly a spectacle to saviour given there was no dog in the fight (if you can call it that).
A lower leg injury to Stephen Curry meant he was absent from Team Giannis’ 184-175 win over Team LeBron on Sunday. It finalized this year’s All-Star festivities in which the Warriors had no participants in any of the events across the weekend.
The 2023 All-Star Game showed exactly why the three-point record of Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry may never be broken.
While a major record did fall as Jayson Tatum set a new scoring record with 55 points, he still failed to replicate the kind of extraordinary long-range shooting that Curry did 12 months ago. In Cleveland on that evening, the two-time regular season MVP put on one of the most awe-inspiring displays of three-point shooting we’ve ever seen. Curry made 16 of his 27 attempts from deep, totalling an even 50 points as he walked away with the Kobe Bryant All-Star Game MVP.
In the closing moments of Sunday’s game, Candace Parker made special note of Tatum’s shooting on the broadcast. It was worth praising no doubt, he’d gone 10-for-18 from three. The fact that’s noteworthy, yet it’s only just over halfway to Curry’s total, goes to show how insane that shooting performance last year was.
Even attempting 25+ threes in an All-Star Game is simply ridiculous, and really should only be reserved for Curry and his unique stature as the greatest shooter of all-time. It’s not just the final number either, it’s the ‘wow’ factor that a Curry three brings depending on the distance or whatever theatrical piece he brings to it.
In the post-match interview after his own MVP-worthy performance, Tatum stated that “records are made to be broken”. While that’s true, there are some NBA records that never will be. Curry’s 16 threes in the All-Star Game may not be as unbreakable as Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points in a regular season game, but it’ll be mighty tough for anyone to get close to what he produced in 2022.
