Steve Kerr compares Moses Moody to veteran Golden State Warriors teammate
It’s been an up-and-down season for Golden State Warriors’ Moses Moody, with the second-year wing spending large periods of the year outside of Steve Kerr’s rotation. Combined with some trade speculation earlier this month, Moody’s future and development has been a bone of contention among some fans.
Steve Kerr has compared Moses Moody to veteran Golden State Warriors teammate Kevon Looney, acknowledging the pairs’ maturity and hardworking nature.
Speaking prior to the Warriors’ 116-101 win over the Houston Rockets on Friday, Kerr was full of praise for the 20-year-old despite the challenges he’s faced this season.
"“He (Moody) reminds me a lot of Looney. Incredibly mature, hardworking, understands what we’re trying to accomplish, puts the work in everyday. But like Loon, came out at 19 after one college year…it takes time. It took Loon till his fourth year to really contribute…What I love about Loon, about Moses, is the sense of maturity and the sense of work ethic.”"
Kerr also confirmed pre-game that Moody would be part of the rotation against Houston, with the 2021 lottery pick ultimately scoring four points in just under 13 minutes of play off the bench. The absence of stars Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins undoubtedly played a role in his recall, but it had also come off the back of eight points in ten impressive garbage-time minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.
Moody may not have the upside of a potential star like fellow 2021 draft class member Jonathan Kuminga, but building a career in the mould of Looney will ensure he has an immensely successful NBA career.
In a career where the franchise has so often tried to find a replacement center, Looney has developed into one of Golden State’s most reliable players over the past two seasons. Given the prioritization of three-and-D wings around the league, Moody could eventually become even more valuable than Looney should he reach a similar level.
In a season where his development has seemingly stalled, Kerr’s comments are a nice reminder that Moody can still become a vital member of the Warriors future.
