One of the Golden State Warriors’ division rivals have had their season thrown into turmoil as the logjam in the Western Conference continues to intensify.

The Athletics’ Shams Charania reported on Monday that Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James would miss an extended period with a foot injury. The 38-year-old aggravated it during his team’s astounding comeback win over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, with Charania’s latest intel suggesting he’ll miss at least two or three weeks.

The Golden State Warriors’ hopes of a playoff spot may be under one less threat as LeBron James gets set for a stint on the sidelines.

After some shrewd moves made by general manager Rob Pelinka before the trade deadline, a revamped Lakers roster has gathered momentum in timely fashion to place themselves back in the playoff mix. They currently sit 12th with a 29-32 record, but are only two games back from the seventh-placed Warriors and 3.5 games back from the fourth-placed Phoenix Suns.

The Lakers have won four of their last five games including two wins over the Warriors, and victories over conference rivals in the Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans. James’ injury means he’ll now miss the last matchup of the regular season against Golden State on Sunday, though Los Angeles did get the win without him in their last visit to Chase Center on February 11.

The injury to the four-time MVP is a bitter blow at such a crucial time, with the Lakers now having to rest heavily on their co-star Anthony Davis. In such a tightly-packed conference, any injury to a star player could spell the end of your season.

The Warriors themselves are trying to cling on to a playoff berth in the absence of Stephen Curry who’s missed the last eight games with a left leg injury. The reigning champions have also been without Andrew Wiggins for the last four games due to personal reasons, and have missed Draymond Green for the last two with a knee contusion. Injuries are a part of sport, but it makes it even more frustrating when they occur during the critical point of the season.
