Golden State Warriors looking to break new ground with win over Clippers
The Golden State Warriors up-and-down season has hit a positive with the reigning champions’ riding a three-game winning streak to catapult up the Western Conference.
An astounding 123-105 comeback win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday could help breathe life into the Warriors floundering season, and they’ll now look to break new ground against the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.
The 33-31 Golden State Warriors will attempt to go three games above .500 for the first time in their underwhelming 2022-23 season to date.
After starting the season 3-7 in their first ten games, the Warriors have often found themselves just trying to cling on to a .500 record. A lack of sustained momentum has meant they’ve hovered around that mark all season, with Thursday’s game presenting their fifth opportunity to move three games above .500.
Golden State were 13-11 at one point in early December before suffering a shock loss at home to the Indiana Pacers. Their next opportunity came a month later, but at 20-18 they lost again to the lowly Detroit Pistons.
A 26-24 Golden State team gave up a double-digit fourth-quarter lead to lose to the Minnesota Timberwolves on February 1. Their last opportunity to go three games above .500 came when they were 28-26, but they went five minutes without scoring over the last six minutes of a 125-122 loss to the Trail Blazers.
It seems the Warriors have found an array of ways to avoid going three games above .500 this season, putting the blowtorch on them to take advantage against their pacific rival. It may be one isolated game, but moving one step further away from mundanity could prove important to the team’s psyche.
It’s also important given the schedule Golden State will face over the coming weeks. They conclude their home stand against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, before undertaking a three-game road trip starting Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers. They’ll follow that with games against the Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, and the Clippers.
