Golden State Warriors convert Anthony Lamb, sign guard to fill two-way spot
In a surprise to very few, the Golden State Warriors have converted Anthony Lamb to a standard NBA contract according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. It makes the 25-year-old part of what is now a 15-man roster and makes him eligible to partake in the NBA playoffs should the reigning champions make it.
The move comes on the back of a fractured wrist for veteran Andre Iguodala, who will require surgery after sustaining the injury against the Phoenix Suns on Monday. Golden State’s playing stocks will briefly be hurt further when Draymond Green serves a one-game suspension for receiving his 16th technical foul during Wednesday’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Anthony Lamb will provide another forward option for Steve Kerr in what’s becoming a dwindling depth chart for the Golden State Warriors.
Lamb will now be eligible to play in Friday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks, having last been seen at NBA level against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 5. In his 50 games on a two-way contract, the 6’6″ forward averaged seven points and 3.4 rebounds in 20.1 minutes per game on 37.9% shooting from deep.
Lamb’s conversion has opened up a two-way spot for the Warriors, with Charania also confirming that Golden State will fill it by signing guard Lester Quinones. The G League product was on a two-way deal with the team during training camp, then was signed to a 10-day contract recently to ensure Lamb and Ty Jerome could continue playing until their allotted 50 games.
The 22-year-old failed to see floor time during that 10-day contract, but his recent G League performances for Santa Cruz have been too hard to ignore. That included a ridiculous 46-point display against the Salt Lake City Stars on Wednesday, with Quinones adding 12 rebounds and four assists to power the Warriors to a 132-119 win. The scoring outburst saw him shoot 12-for-18 from the floor, 6-for-10 from three-point range, and 11-for-14 from the free-throw line.
With Andrew Wiggins out indefinitely and Gary Payton II still recovering from injury, expect Lamb’s minutes to go back to over 20 minutes per game for the immediate future.. He or Jonathan Kuminga are likely to start in place of Green for Friday’s important matchup in Atlanta.
