A fourth championship in eight seasons was a priceless moment for the Golden State Warriors in 2022, but if you could put a price on it, then that’s officially been finalized in the NBA’s revenue sharing for the 2021-22 season.

The current collective bargaining agreement sees tax paying teams send half of their luxury tax payments into a pool that’s then distributed to non-tax paying teams. The Warriors were one of 10 teams over the luxury tax threshold last season.

The Golden State Warriors had the highest payroll in the league last season, with 20 NBA teams benefitting from their huge luxury tax bill.

Ownerships willingness to spend big on the roster has been a crucial factor to Golden State’s dynasty period. 20 teams were beneficiaries of that willingness in 2021-22, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

"“The Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers combined to pay more than $88 million in revenue sharing receipts. The Warriors paid an additional $170 million in luxury tax payments, and the Lakers another $45 million in tax as part of the league’s punitive penalty for exceeding the salary cap.”"

Seven of the nine biggest beneficiaries came from the Western Conference, headlined by the Denver Nuggets ($35.5) who sat only behind the Indiana Pacers ($42.2 million) in receiving the most.

If the Warriors were stung hard this season and the years prior, then it’s nothing to what they’re expected to give up next season. After handing out contract extensions to Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole, and with Draymond Green having a player option, Golden State’s estimated luxury tax bill is $242,722,768 according to Spotrac.

The collective bargaining agreement and subsequent salary cap rules is one of the league’s biggest talking points to come over the short-to-medium term future. The Warriors have been advantaged by their ability to develop and retain their own players, and it will be interesting to see if that’s allowed to continue to the same extent going forward.
