Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks are one of the talking points of the NBA right now, sliding down the West standings despite the addition of Kyrie Irving before the trade deadline. With Irving a free agent and the front office yet to put a contending roster around Luka Doncic, this offseason shapes as a pivotal one for the future of the franchise.

Dallas are 23rd in defensive rating this season, and 25th over the last 15 games. They dealt their best wing defender, Dorian Finney-Smith, to Brooklyn in the Irving trade, and their quartet of big men, Christian Wood, Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber and Javale McGee, simply aren’t protecting the rim on any consistent basis.

They need an injection of defense, even if it means letting Irving walk. Would they be willing to give Green $25 million per season for three or four years? His fiery nature and competitiveness would bring a needed element as well, although there would be question marks with how he’d work offensively given Doncic’s ball-dominant style.

If Green went to the Warriors demanding a multi-year deal at $25 million per season, then you’d expect the franchise to make it happen. Therefore, again, the financial difference isn’t really there. Like the Trail Blazers, what are the Mavericks offering Green that would convince him to leave the only NBA team he’s ever known?

If anything this exercise is proof that it would be a shock if Green were to leave Golden State. The teams that need him are the ones that that have clear issues, and because of those they’re no closer to a championship than the Warriors. Dubnation remain hopeful that each of Curry, Thompson and Green will retire as one-team players, and that fulfilment starts with the latter re-signing this offseason.
