Golden State Warriors: Draymond Green’s twitter tirade reflects CBA disappointment
The new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NBA and the NBA Players Association has caused quite the controversy over the past 48 hours, with many critical of the deal between the two sides. That includes Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green who let his disappointment be known in a series of twitter posts on Saturday.
A plethora of new aspects have been introduced in a bid to provide greater parity across the league, and to strengthen the regular season through greater player availability an in-season tournament. More importantly for the Warriors, the removal of the taxpayer mid-level exception (for teams $17.5 million or more over the trax threshold) brings a frustrating free agency challenge they’d rather not face.
Draymond Green’s twitter tirade reflects widely held disappointment on the new CBA, particularly among Golden State Warriors fans who feel it specifically targeted their franchise.
Green was scathing of his fellow players who agreed to the new seven-year deal after negotiations. The 33-year-old stated, “never seen someone go to a table with the assets that makes an entire machine go, and lose EVERY time! Blasphemous!”
There are no Golden State players currently in leadership roles at the Players Association. New Orleans Pelicans guard C.J McCollum is currently President, with Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams his First-Vice. Former Warrior Harrison Barnes is Secretary-Treasurer, while other Vice Presidents include Bismack Biyombo, Malcolm Brogdon, Jaylen Brown, Jaren Jackson Jr, Donovan Mitchell and Garrett Temple.
Green was critical of prize money for the in-season tournament, believing players lost out after his expectation of $1 million per player was reduced to $500,000. He then responded with a trio of thinking emojis to a tweet asking “what did the players win in negotiations?”
From a Golden State perspective, Green said he “possibly should’ve made more” during his career with the franchise. The four-time champion was responding to a fan who had stated, “pretty sure you won enough already” alongside a screenshot of Green’s current contract. The former Defensive Player of the Year responded by referencing the growth in the value of the franchise since his arrival.
Making matters more intriguing is the fact Green can opt out of his current deal and be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. How these new rules and regulations potentially affect his next contract is a wait-and-see, but it’s fair to say Green, like many others, isn’t a fan of what his fellow players have agreed to.
