Golden State Warriors get all clear on controversial win over Mavericks
The Golden State Warriors have got the all clear on their March 22 win over the Dallas Mavericks, with the NBA officially dismissing a protest following one of the most controversial plays of the season during the third-quarter.
There was quite bizarre scenes after miscommunication led to a free basket for the Warriors that subsequently became the talk of the NBA world over the following 24 hours. Following a timeout, Dallas players wrongly believed they had possession, allowing Jordan Poole to inbound to Kevon Looney for a dunk while all five Mavericks were on the other end of the floor.
The Golden State Warriors won’t be affected by a protest made in the immediate aftermath of a two-point win over the Dallas Mavericks last month.
The Mavericks, led by owner Mark Cuban, launched an official protest straight after the game. It was just the 36th protest in NBA history, with Cuban labelling it the “worst officiating non call mistake possibly in the history of the NBA.”
The NBA has ultimately dismissed the protest, though they were happy to acknowledge the responsibility of the referees in what will go down as one of the strangest moments of the season.
"“The NBA concluded that although the game officials could have taken steps to better manage manage this particular situation, that did not provide a basis for the extraordinary remedy of upholding a game protest.”"
After what was a pivotal matchup at the time, the Mavericks season has only gone from bad to worse. Despite acquiring Kyrie Irving before February’s trade deadline, Dallas has freefallen to a 38-42 record and 11th in the Western Conference.
The two-point result could prove critical for both teams in the final standings. The win could be the difference between Golden State securing a top six spot and being involved in the Play-In Tournament, while the loss could eliminate the Mavericks from playoff contention. At the end of the day, it’s just one result out of 82 and both teams would be disappointed with their season to date regardless.
