Golden State Warriors: Klay Thompson closing in on major achievement
This season has marked Klay Thompson’s first full year since returning from two devastating leg injuries, and the Golden State Warriors sharpshooter is nearing a major, career-first achievement.
Despite missing Tuesday’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder with lower back soreness, Thompson has a near unassailable lead over his rivals at the top of this season’s three-pointers made list.
Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson is set to finish as the leader in most three-pointers in the NBA for the 2022-23 season.
The 33-year-old currently sits with 290 made threes with two regular season games remaining. Indiana Pacers guard Buddy Hield sits second but is 12 behind with 278, while Thompson’s teammate, Stephen Curry, is third with 265. Further down the list, another Warrior in Jordan Poole is 11th with 210, though the fourth-year guard is likely to finish inside the top ten.
Thompson’s achievement is even more incredible given it’s been just over 12 months since his return from two major leg injuries. The five-time All-Star tore his ACL during the 2019 Finals against the Toronto Raptors, then tore his achilles during the 2020 offseason.
Almost incredibly, despite being widely acknowledged as, at minimum, a top five shooter of all-time, this is the first time Thompson will have led the league in three-point makes. Part of that is because he’s spent his whole career next to Curry, with the two-time MVP having led the league on a record seven times.
Thompson has made 12 three-pointers in a single game twice this season, performances only bettered by Damian Lillard who made 13 against the lowly Houston Rockets on February 26. After a slow start to the season, the four-time NBA champion is shooting a healthy 40.7% from beyond the arc. A proven playoff performer, the Warriors will be relying on Thompson to continue to be a flamethrower from deep should they secure their postseason spot.
