Golden State Warriors: Kevon Looney set for major milestone in Game 82
After an injury-plagued start to his career, the ironman story of Kevon Looney has become one of the most remarkable aspects to the Golden State Warriors’ recent success. On Sunday against the Portland Trail Blazers, the big man will play in his 193rd-straight regular season game.
That mark dates back to March 2021, with Looney having played the final 29 games of the 2020-21 season. He’s now played all 82 in each of the last two, a mark only matched by Brooklyn Nets wing Mikal Bridges.
Golden State Warriors’ center Kevon Looney will conclude an astounding regular season on Sunday as he prepares to finish first in the league for offensive rebounds.
It’s hard to fathom where the Warriors would be without Looney, such has been his reliability in recent seasons. Given his durability and the workload that’s been placed on him, it would be easy to understand if the 27-year-old had fluctuated in form over the period.
Instead, Looney has managed to consistently improve over the past few seasons. For someone with little fanfare, that growth will officially be recognized when he finishes the season with the mantle as the league’s leading offensive rebounder.
Looney has 271 offensive rebounds so far this season, well clear of his rivals around the NBA. It’s also 63 more than the career-best he set last season, with his 752 total rebounds bettering his previous high by over 150.
Slightly undersized at 6’9″, Looney’s rebounding capabilities are a testament to his hard work on and off the floor, his mentality and instincts, and the overall role he’s been able to carve out with the Warriors. The franchise has practically gone two entire seasons without a suitable backup center, catapulting Looney into one of the team’s most important players.
So, while Bridges may have played just four seconds in the Nets’ final game to ensure his streak extends, Looney will be front and center playing a key role again as Golden State seeks to secure a playoff spot without the need for the Play-In Tournament.
