Now facing a 3-1 deficit against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Golden State Warriors are barely breathing in their hunt for back-to-back NBA championships, Yet while their season remains ever so slightly alive, there’s no doubt that for general manager Bob Myers, one eye will already be turned towards what’s bound to be a critical offseason.
Putting aside Myers’ own contract negotiations, the Warriors have some major decisions to make starting with free agent forward Draymond Green. Aside from that, Golden State have a number of holes they’ll look to fill with limited financial capacity.
The season just finished for eight first-round playoff losers, and with it comes a look towards free agency for some players that the Golden State Warriors could target.
The Warriors won’t be able to make any major free agency splash this offseason, but they don’t need to with their core still in tact assuming Green re-signs or opts into his option. Golden State’s bench issues have been well publicized this season though, and free agency will give them a chance to replenish their stocks. Here are five options for the Warriors from teams that were eliminated in the first-round of the postseason:
1. Seth Curry
The thought of the Curry brothers playing together has always been a tantalizing prospect for NBA fans, and now there’s a realistic path for it to happen. Seth will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and will clearly be a target for a plethora of teams in need of an elite three-point shooter.
Curry had a slightly down season for the Brooklyn Nets, with his 19.9 minutes per game the lowest since 2018-19. He still shot the ball from deep at over 40% on an average of 3.8 attempts, with the 32-year-old remaining one of the most dangerous catch-and-shoot threats in the league.
Coming off a four-year, $32 million contract, Curry might be out of Golden State’s limited price range. However, given he’s yet to taste championship success, he might be willing to take a discount to join the Warriors. Perhaps even more inviting is the fact this will be the last time the Curry brothers could play together where they’re both somewhere near their prime. His position and skillset isn’t the biggest need for Golden State, but he could be a valuable bench piece for a team that’s struggled in that aspect this season.
