Golden State Warriors must tackle first step before proceeding with big offseason
After a disappointing end to their playoff campaign against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Golden State Warriors face a critical offseason where they’ll seek to address the short and long-term future of the franchise.
But in order for the Warriors to effectively make the right moves in re-establishing and keeping alive their decade-long dynasty, they must tackle the first step that will lead the decision-making pathway thereafter.
The Golden State Warriors must do what they can to retain Bob Myers, with the general manager reportedly torn on his future at the franchise.
Having held the role of general manager for the last 11 years, Bob Myers’ current contract expires at the end of June. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 48-year-old’s return to the Warriors is not a fait accompli.
"“Bob Myers told me last night that he plans to take a couple of weeks to make a decision about his future running the Golden State Warriors. It’s a decision that he said that he’s torn about, in large part because of his relationships with the core three of Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.”"
Myers has been the architect behind the Warriors’ success over the last decade, winning the NBA’s Executive of the Year award in Golden State’s 2015 and 2017 championship seasons. Although there were clear flaws in the roster assembled for the 2022-23 season, Myers has nonetheless cemented himself as one of the best general managers in the league.
The Warriors have a slew of important decisions to make this offseason, each of which will become more difficult and complicated should Myers intend to depart the franchise. His current contract timeline matches the date that free agency negotiation can begin (June 30), meaning ownership will have to have a quick contingency plan in place should they fail to re-sign him.
According to a report by The Athletic in January, Myers will be due for a salary increase that reflects his standing as one of the best GM’s in the NBA. Per that same report, Myers’ isn’t in the top five paid executives across the league, something that will need to change in order to retain him.
With the potential of Draymond Green becoming an unrestricted free agent, and the futures of Jordan Poole and Jonathan Kuminga bound to be addressed, the Warriors’ offseason has to start positively by securing the signature of one of their most important assets.
