First Piece of Golden State Warriors’ Dynasty could fall on Tuesday
The future of the Golden State Warriors will hit a critical juncture at 1pm PT on Tuesday, with President of Basketball Operations Bob Myers to address the media for perhaps one of the final times.
Myers’ future at the franchise has been a source of speculation since the Warriors’ second-round exit against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 48-year-old’s current contract concludes at the end of June, just before the start of the free agency period.
General Manager Bob Myers is expected to address his future at the Golden State Warriors when he speaks to media at 1pm PT on Tuesday.
Myers has been at the franchise since 2011, and in the role of general manager since 2012. During his time in control, the Warriors have won four NBA champions and missed the playoffs just twice in 11 seasons.
While there is no absolute concrete reporting on his departure from Golden State, many on social media are already paying tribute to Myers in expectation that he’ll confirm on Tuesday that he’s stepping away from the franchise.
Myers has been a huge part of the Warriors’ success over the last decade, playing a pivotal role alongside the hall of fame core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, along with long-time coach Steve Kerr.
He is one of only 11 general managers in history to win the NBA’s Executive of the Year on multiple occasions. Myers won the award following Golden State’s long-awaited championship in 2015, as well as two years later after helping to lure Kevin Durant to the franchise.
It’s yet to be seen what impact Myers’ potential departure could have on the Warriors’ experienced core, but it’s fair to say that it could procure some anxiety based on his relationships with Curry, Thompson and Green.
Green can opt out of his $27.6 million player option and become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The 33-year-old recently admitted that Myers’ decision could very well impact his own future, having never played under a different general manager during his career.
Thompson is also eligible for a contract extension this offseason, otherwise he’ll enter free agency in 2024. The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater recently reported that a request for Thompson to take a pay cut might “land softer” coming from Myers.
While there will be undoubted celebration for what Myers has brought to the franchise over his tenure, it will be a disappointing day for the Warriors should he announce his departure as many expect.
