The Golden State Warriors have entered a period of uncertainty after President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, Bob Myers, announced that he would depart the franchise during his end of season press conference on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old will leave big shoes to fill when he officially finishes up at the end of June, and there’s a high likelihood that they’re filled by someone already within the organization.

In the wake of Bob Myers’ decision to leave the franchise, could the Golden State Warriors make a shock switch with four-time championship winning coach Steve Kerr?

Among the candidates linked to the now vacant position, owner Joe Lacob’s son Kirk, and current Vice President of Basketball Operations, Mike Dunleavy Jr. Yet perhaps there’s another even more notable figure that could be in line for the role.

Speaking on 95.7 The Game’s Steiny and Guru on Tuesday, Matt Steinmetz floated the idea of Steve Kerr making the shock switch from head coach to General Manager.

"“It’s just a hunch…Steve Kerr becomes GM of the Warriors. He’s got one year left as a coach and he’s been a GM before”, Steinmetz said."

After a decorated career that included five championships, and following a period as a broadcaster and commentator, Kerr became GM of the Phoenix Suns in June 2007. In three years holding the role, he executed multiple trades that included Shaquille O’Neal, Ben Wallace, Shawn Marion, Boris Diaw and Jason Richardson.

Kerr has gone on to build a legendary résumé at the Warriors, with the franchise having won four titles in his nine years as head coach since 2014. The idea of him moving back into a GM role isn’t new though, with William Spencer forecasting such an event less than six months ago.

"“This event will trigger current head coach, Steve Kerr, to become the new general manager, with his assistant, Kenny Atkinson, to become the new Head Coach of the Golden State Warriors”, Spencer predicted."

It remains unlikely to play out, but the first piece of the puzzle has fallen with Myers announcing his departure. Atkinson, the former head coach of the Brooklyn Nets between 2015-2019, is widely regarded as one of the best assistants in the league right now.

Atkinson verbally accepted the role as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets 12 months ago, yet chose to withdraw from the move after the Warriors won the 2022 NBA championship. He’s since been a candidate for a number of the head coaching opportunities available this offseason, but narrowly missed out on the Milwaukee Bucks job in favor of Adrian Griffin.

If the Warriors wish to keep the role in-house, and give it to someone with actual experience in the position, then Kerr is a viable option. Whether the 57-year-old would consider it is a different story, but nothing should be totally ruled out at this point.
