Although James Wiseman’s career at the Golden State Warriors may have come to a disappointing and unfortunate ending, it’s fair to say the majority of the fanbase wishes the 22-year-old well going forward.

The former number two overall pick was traded by the franchise at February’s trade deadline, with a four-team deal sending Wiseman to the Detroit Pistons and bringing Gary Payton II back to the Warriors.

Former Golden State Warriors’ center James Wiseman has a new coach after the Detroit Pistons offered an historically lucrative deal to Monty Williams.

After a disastrous 17-65 record in 2022-23, Pistons head coach Dwane Casey vacated the role in order to move into the team’s front office. After heavily pursuing 2022 Coach of the Year Monty Williams over recent weeks, Detroit have eventually got their man with a huge financial offer to the 51-year-old.

According to The Athetic’s Shams Charania, the Pistons have signed Williams to a six-year, $72 million contract — one which could increase to eight years and $100 million should he reach incentives.

Williams was fired by the Phoenix Suns on May 13 after a second-round exit against the now NBA finalist Denver Nuggets. It came after a season after winning Coach of the Year for leading the Suns to a 64-18 record.

In his third coaching stint, Williams will transition to a rebuilding team after the championship pressure he faced over the last couple of years in Phoenix. Detroit have a plethora of high-end talent already on their roster, including Wiseman.

It will be interesting to see how Wiseman develops under Williams’ tutelage. The latter had a public falling out of sorts with Suns’ center Deandre Ayton over the last 12 months, some of which was undoubtedly influenced by the big man’s role in a Phoenix offense that prioritized perimeter play and mid-range jumpshots.

Wiseman played 22 games for the Pistons post trade, averaging 12.7 points and 8.1 rebounds in 25.2 minutes per game. He played in just 60 games for the Warriors across a turbulent start to his career.
