NBA free agency is upon us, and so far, this NBA offseason has not disappointed. The Golden State Warriors want to add more veteran depth this free agency, but their most important task was bringing back Draymond Green.
Green declined his $27.5 million dollar back on June 19th, which made him an unrestricted free agent. Although many believed that Green would be returning to the Warriors, there were undoubtedly rumors of potential landing spots not named Golden State. Ultimately, Green wanted an extension lined up with Stephen Curry’s contract, and the four-time NBA champion got what he wanted.
The official deal is 4-years, 100 million dollars, with a fourth-year player option. Draymond’s first year of his new contract will be $22.3 million, a considerable pay cut compared to the $27.5 he declined. This now cuts the projected reaper tax bill by $43 million—an excellent deal for the Warriors.
Regarding production, Draymond Green has been and always will be the heart and soul of this Warriors franchise. You will rarely see his impact on the game in the box score. That being said, Draymond had a down year regarding numbers.
Most notably, the biggest story from this Warriors season was the infamous Draymond Green punch. After the season, it was made clear that the altercation between Green and Poole caused a lot of disruption throughout the team. I wholeheartedly believe Green has a lot left in the tank. New GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. looks to be going all in on this core group’s final years, and you can’t do that without Draymond Green.
Regarding free agency, be on the lookout for some other signings for the Warriors. I don’t suspect they are done yet.
