Report further links Golden State Warriors with free agent forward
The Golden State Warriors continue to be linked with veteran forward Rudy Gay, with the 36-year-old having officially been waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder earlier this week.
There’ll be no shortage of suitors for Gay who projects as a vastly experienced forward option for championship contenders. That includes the Warriors who remain with two available roster spots ahead of next season.
Rudy Gay is expected to draw interest from the Golden State Warriors, according to Hoopshype’s Michael Scotto.
Gay averaged 14.6 minutes per game with the Utah Jazz last season, and although his shooting percentages took a hit, there’s optimism they could revive back within a playoff team. Hoopshype’s Michael Scotto revealed Golden State as one of five teams who may have interest in the 16-year veteran.
"“Veteran forward Rudy Gay is expected to draw interest from several playoff-caliber teams, including the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Chicago Bulls, and New Orleans Pelicans, league sources told HoopsHype.”"
The Warriors made another roster move on Friday, officially signing young guard Lester Quinones to a two-way contract. It’s an underrated and important move for the franchise after the 22-year-old’s form in Summer League led many to believe he’d warrant a standard deal.
That could still eventuate, with The Athletic’s Anthony Slater reporting that “there’s a strong chance they (Golden State) have a camp competition for the 14th spot”. If that’s the case, the likelihood of Gay being a part of the Warriors’ setup appears slim.
Other veterans have previously competed in training camp for a contract — take Avery Bradley for example two years ago. However, Gay will almost assuredly receive a guaranteed contract with a team well before training camp.
The Warriors are all but certain to leave their 15th roster spot vacant as they did last season before ultimately converting Anthony Lamb’s two-way contract on March 17.
