Steve Kerr takes responsibility for Golden State Warriors’ major issue in 2022-23
Golden State Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr has taken responsibility for his team’s disconnect last season, with the lack of cohesion ultimately leading to a second-round playoff exit for the 2022 NBA champions.
Despite plenty of optimism that they’d be able to turn it around, things were off at the franchise for almost the entirety of 2022-23. With an horrific road record underpinning their season, the Warriors were never able to gather sustained momentum.
While Steve Kerr may have been able to do more at certain points, a lack of chemistry at the Golden State Warriors was far from his doing last season.
Speaking with The Mercury News’ Shayna Rubin, Kerr was candid in revealing his part in the team’s struggles throughout last season.
"“I will say that I feel like I failed last year in connecting the group. I have taken a lot of time this summer to think about last year, things I could have and should have done differently.”"
While Kerr may wish to take some responsibility, there’s no doubt that the mood went awry after the training camp incident between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole. Everything appeared rosy to that point, but things shifted almost immediately as the reigning champions begun 3-7 in their first ten games.
With a new General Manager in Mike Dunleavy Jr., the Warriors have undertaken a major revamp since their conference semifinals loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. That’s seen a more win-now approach as the franchise sets about further maximizing their aging core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Green.
Golden State sent Poole, fellow youngsters Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins, and future draft capital to the Washington Wizards for 38-year-old Chris Paul. They also made a shrewd move in acquiring free agent Dario Saric amid a move towards more Warrior-style players.
The 2023-24 season will mark ten years of Kerr’s reign as coach of the franchise, with the 57-year-old looking forward to the challenge of adding to his nine total championships as a player and head coach.
"“I really believe that sometimes losing sort of forces you to reassess and reevaluate and I’m excited about coming back next year with a renewed focus and energy and spirit from the entire group. And that starts with me and I can’t wait”, Kerr said."
Despite their turbulent 2022-23 season, Golden State are still viewed by many as a genuine championship contender. They’ll be hoping for no distractions akin to the training camp altercation last October.
