The Golden State Warriors have been the most successful NBA franchise over the past decade, winning four championships and having been to the Finals on a further two occasions in 2016 and 2019.
Yet there’s one year that sticks out as a major outlier to all their dominance — the disastrous 2019-20 season where they produced a league-worst 15-50 record before the covid pandemic brought an end to it.
Intertwined between years of success, the horrific 2019-20 season isn’t all that easy to forget for Golden State Warriors’ fans.
Having come off five-straight NBA Finals appearances and three championships, the Warriors’ 2019-20 season was doomed from the start. It really began during Game 6 of the 2019 Finals when Klay Thompson went down with a devastating torn ACL, sidelining him for the entirety of the following season.
Golden State then lost their two-time MVP, Kevin Durant, to the Brooklyn Nets in free agency shortly after. Although they tried to salvage something by acquiring D’Angelo Russell in the sign-and-trade, this was a roster far weaker than what had been seen in the years prior.
Any hope the Warriors had completely faded when their superstar, Stephen Curry, was injured in the fourth game of the season against the Phoenix Suns. The two-time MVP’s broken hand forced him out until March, leaving a completely broken NBA team that was solely focused on the future.
Golden State had 22 players take to the floor for them that season, obviously not including Thompson. That’s evidence of where the were at, practically trialling players in the hope they could be developed into rotation pieces either for themselves or for other as trade assets.
There were some individual positives to be had, but for many that version of the Warriors provided their last taste of NBA action. Eight players remain in the NBA, four of which remain with the franchise to this day.
What happened to the members of the 2019-20 Golden State Warriors? Here we’re going to go through every player that appeared in at least five games for the franchise during that tumultuous season.
