Dwight Howard’s cryptic post amid reported rejection from Golden State Warriors

After earlier reports suggested there was a strong likelihood veteran center Dwight Howard would join the Golden State Warriors, the 37-year-old’s chances of a return to the NBA were hurt on Friday with news the franchise are not expected to add the eight-time All-Star.

Howard had a two-day stint in the Bay this week, undertaking meetings and workouts with the franchise. He then joined veterans Draymond Green and Chris Paul in Los Angeles for workouts over the last few days.

Dwight Howard’s cryptic tweet clearly references his recent link to the Golden State Warriors and his potential return to the NBA.

Despite getting approval from the Warrior veterans, assumedly Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Green and Paul, Howard’s move to Golden State hasn’t come to fruition, or at least not for the moment.

Howard has taken to X (Twitter) on multiple occasions over recent days, but most notably raised eyebrows on Saturday with a post referencing to being a Warrior.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania did state “the Warriors are not expected to sign Dwight Howard or another veteran center ahead of training camp”. Perhaps that leaves the possibility of the three-time Defensive Player of the Year still joining the team prior to the start of the regular season on October 24.

However, The Athletic’s Anthony Slater also added that “an extra wing has become the camp priority for the Warriors”. Golden State will seemingly have a training camp battle for their 14th roster spot, starting on October 2.

Howard’s search for a new NBA home continues, having not played in the league since the 2021-22 season where he averaged 6.2 points and 5.9 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Turning 38 in December, Howard is yet to be significantly linked to another NBA team outside the Warriors after playing in Taiwan last season.
