Golden State Warriors: Stephen Curry reveals dream trio for new expansion
The newest Bay Area team was unveiled on Thursday with the Golden State Warriors awarded the WNBA’s latest expansion franchise.
While the team will play at Chase Center, train at the franchise’s former home in Oakland, and will go by ‘Golden State’, the name and mascot won’t be revealed until a later date. The league announced that the team will begin playing in 2025.
Golden State Warriors’ superstar Stephen Curry has revealed his dream trio to headline the franchise’s new WNBA expansion team.
Speaking at a press conference after training camp on Thursday, two-time MVP Stephen Curry was asked a plethora of questions relating to the franchise’s latest exciting news.
That included being asked about his dream trio to build a WNBA expansion team, with the 35-year-old listing New York Liberty duo Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, along with Las Vegas Aces’ power-forward A’ja Wilson.
"“A’ja, Stewie and I probably take Sabrina – those three. It’s a solid trio and we’re going to see all three of them this weekend so easy picks,” Curry said."
Stewart and Ionescu will meet Wilson when the Liberty and Aces take to the floor for the WNBA finals beginning on Sunday. Las Vegas will be looking to win their second-straight WNBA title after defeating the Connecticut Sun in 2022.
Wilson was an ‘obvious’ pick for Curry having been a two-time MVP and two-time Defensive Player of the Year winner, along with five All-Star selections. The 27-year-old averaged 22.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists across 40 games during the regular season.
Stewart is one of the most accomplished players in WNBA history, winning two MVP’s, two Finals MVP’s, and also being selected to five All-Star games. The 29-year-old averaged 23.0 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists during the regular season.
Ionescu stunned the NBA world when she broke the record for most points in an All-Star weekend Three-Point Contest, with the 25-year-old scoring 37 to usurp Curry’s previous high-mark of 37.
As for Golden State’s new WNBA team, ever-ambitious owner Joe Lacob has already planted his desire for early success, stating, “we will win a championship in the first five years.”
