The Oklahoma City Thunder have come to terms on a rookie extension with young guard Cason Wallace, putting themselves under financial pressure that the Golden State Warriors could exploit in the next 12 months.
Wallace has signed a five-year, $139 million deal right at the extension deadline, adding another major salary to the Thunder payroll that's set to go above the second apron next season.
Cason Wallace extension adds to Thunder's payroll pressure
Oklahoma City now project to have six players making over $20 million in the 2027-28 season, starting with back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who will make $61.6 million on the first year of an extension.
The bigger intrigue surrounding the Thunder roster comes with young stars Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, both of who will make in excess of $44 million in that 2027-28 year. Holmgren is coming off a disappointing playoff campaign that only got worse in the Western Conference Finals, while Williams has dealt with multiple hamstring issues that limited him to only 33 games last season.
My current payroll projection for the 2027-28 Oklahoma City Thunder that won’t actually turn out like this.

They’ve got big decisions to make next summer though I still expect them to pay an exorbitant luxury tax bill and operate above the second apron next season. https://t.co/fT0dwtZ9Ez pic.twitter.com/qAAaiGV4SE
Perhaps Oklahoma City are good enough, particularly if they win the championship this season, for ownership and the front office to go into the second apron and pay a huge tax bill. That would, however, go against what many teams around the league have done this offseason, including the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks and another contender in the Denver Nuggets.
The Warriors aren't necessarily in championship contention, but they too are hovering just under the second apron with no interest in going over it, not only due to the tax penalties but also the roster-building restrictions.
Warriors could benefit from Thunder's financial pressure
Golden State may be just under the second apron right now, but they've actually set themselves up with significant flexibility, either at this season's mid-season trade deadline or as a cap space team in free agency next year.
There would be a number of Thunder players who they could foreseeably hold interest in, potentially starting with Holmgren as a very talented, All-Star level big man who could be a key pillar of the present and future.
There's nothing yet to suggest Holmgren will become available, yet there was debate over his future following an incredibly disappointing Conference Finals. With Wallace's extension now locked in, something may have to give with the Thunder and the Warriors have positioned themselves to help relieve the financial pressure they've put themselves in.
