While the Golden State Warriors wanted no part of Devin Carter when he was offered to them by the Sacramento Kings last offseason, the Boston Celtics are now willing to take a chance on the former lottery pick after he was waived by the Atlanta Hawks last week.
The Warriors had the chance to acquire Carter in a sign-and-trade for Jonathan Kuminga last year, but wisely turned down the move as the former 13th overall pick now finds himself at the crossroads entering his third NBA season.

It's notable that a strong franchise in the Celtics with a productive development history believe they can get something out of Carter, with player and franchise agreeing to a training camp contract as first reported by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
It's also noteworthy that Carter, according to NBA insider Marc Stein on Monday night, took up an opportunity in Boston rather than seek potentially more lucrative deals elsewhere.
"Word is Carter, who was selected No. 13 overall by Sacramento in 2024 and still has one fully guaranteed season left on his original rookie deal, prioritized the optimal situation over contractual terms in his search for a new team and will try now to jumpstart his career now with the Celtics," Stein wrote.
Carter averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in his second season with the Kings, shooting only 41.4% from the floor and 26.3% from 3-point range. He averaged 3.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists during his rookie year with the Kings, leaving them to offer the 6'2" guard up as the headline of an incredibly underwhelming offer for Kuminga that the Warriors quickly denied.

Boston are banking on their development system and Carter's talent as a recent lottery pick, albeit his selection in 2024 by Sacramento certainly raised some eyebrows when more notable prospects like Kel'el Ware and Jared McCain were taken with two of the next three selections.
You can see why the Celtics have taken the risk when there's very little to no downside, as opposed to the Warriors who would have been sending out a former seventh overall pick for Carter, veteran big Dario Saric who's no longer in the league, and two measly second-round picks.
There will always be a watch on Carter to see how his career develops given the Warriors had the chance to land him, but he's a long way back from making Golden State regret their decision.
