The Golden State Warriors are trying to shake things up this season. Head coach Steve Kerr is trying to implement a new style of offense which is good because it shows that he understands the team cannot simply run it back with the same roster and same strategy from last season and expect different results.
Now the question becomes whether this roster of old dogs is capable of learning some new tricks. The Warriors have a lot of veterans including Stephen Curry and Draymond Green who are used to doing things a certain way. Curry proved in the team's preseason opener that it's going to take some time to cut down on his turnovers which is a goal of Kerr's new offensive strategy, but how Green adapts may be the bigger question.
Adversity will prove whether Draymond is on board with new offensive scheme
The Warriors want Green to be moving up the floor quicker in this new offense rather than trailing the play which is what he's typically been accustomed to doing. Kerr also wants Green to shoot more open threes, so we may see the 36-year-old become something of a sharpshooter. He's definitely not known for his 3-point shooting, but he's shown he can knock shots down from beyond the arc in the past.
While all this change in Green's 15th NBA season might be a bit of a shock for a veteran like him, it seems like he's taking the changes in stride thus far. Luca Evans of the San Francisco Chronicle shared on social media that Green said the following when asked how he likes the new offense:
"Yeah, definitely feel it. Whether I like it or not, it’s going to happen. So I don’t wanna get off into it, whether I like it or dislike it. It is what it is.”
That's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but Green also said that he understands why the Warriors are changing things up. Perhaps it's just a matter of getting used to the new way of doing things.
Still, it isn't hard to see things going south if the Warriors struggle under this new offense and Green feels like he isn't a big part of things in a way that he used to be. While he and Kerr typically have a good relationship, they got into it on the bench last year and we know if Green is displeased, he's not afraid to make himself heard.
It's just the preseason so everything should be fine for now, but the real test of whether Green accepts the new offense is going to happen if and when the team struggles during the regular season.
