The Dallas Mavericks have secured Klay Thompson on a two-year, $11.5 million contract, but much like the Golden State Warriors they still have two available roster spots just over a month out from training camp.
The Heat now have a chance to steal another player linked to the Warriors, with Gabe Vincent mentioned as a potential target for both teams over recent weeks as they look to round out their rosters.
Heat can reunite with Gabe Vincent after Warriors interest
Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported at the end of last month that Golden State were looking at Vincent as a potential free agency option, along with fellow veteran Kelly Olynyk and young guard Brandon Williams. All three players remain unsigned nearly two months into free agency.
Vincent's ongoing availibility has seen him draw interest from the Heat according to insider Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald earlier this week. That might subside now in the wake of Thompson's acquisition, but there's still a familiarity between player and franchise that's hard to ignore.
The 30-year-old played four seasons with the Heat to start his career, including playing a pivotal role in their 2023 run to the NBA Finals that was led by now Warrior forward Jimmy Butler. Vincent's impact earned him a three-year, $33 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, but he simply hasn't been the same player since which resulted in him being traded to the Atlanta Hawks before February's mid-season deadline.
Perhaps the Heat believe they can re-ignite Vincent's career just as they helped build his reputation, with the 6'2" guard averaging only 4.4 points and 1.4 assists on 35.2% shooting from the floor and 34.1% from 3-point range last season.
Warriors should have no interest in Gabe Vincent
Despite reportedly being on their radar, Golden State should be more than content with Miami or another team signing Vincent and taking him off the market. As much as the Warriors could do with more outside shooting, nothing over the past three seasons suggests he can become a consistent and meaningful rotation player in the Bay.
Still, there are ties to Butler who could return to the rotation before the end of the calendar year, and anything can happen before Golden State 's finalizes it's training camp roster over the next month.
Vincent landing back with the Heat wouldn't be the first Warriors target they've acquired this offseason, albeit there's a significant difference between he and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
