The Denver Nuggets may now be the only thing standing between Jonathan Kuminga and a move to the Cleveland Cavaliers after former Golden State Warriors guard Dennis Schroder was traded on Friday.
The Cavaliers have opened the door to a potential free agency lifeline for the former seventh overall pick after dumping Schroder's contract to the Charlotte Hornets, but their interest in Nuggets forward Peyton Watson still places an obstacle in front of Kuminga resolving his uncertain future.
Jonathan Kuminga's path to Cavaliers may hinge on Nuggets
ESPN's Shams Charania reported after details of the trade that Cleveland's pursuit of Kuminga and Peyton Watson has become more viable as a result of moving on from Schroder. It gives the former Warrior forward another opportunity, rather than having just the Los Angeles Lakers as a suitor during a long free agency process.
But the Cavaliers' strongly reported interest in Watson over recent days suggests the Nuggets restricted free agent may be the priority over Kuminga. That means the 23-year-old's path may hinge on Denver rejecting sign-and-trade offers from Cleveland on Watson, forcing the Cavaliers to turn their attention to Kuminga and a deal with the Atlanta Hawks.
The Cavaliers remain in constant communication with James Harden and his agents on a new contract to return to Cleveland while they strongly pursue two free agent forwards -- restricted Peyton Watson and unrestricted Jonathan Kuminga -- made more viable with Friday's trade.

The Nuggets have reportedly been open to sign-and-trade offers, much more so than the Warriors this time last year when Kuminga remained a restricted free agent. However, the financial constraints of both teams, even after the Schroder trade on Friday, could make a deal difficult between Cleveland and Denver when it comes to Watson.
Jonathan Kuminga needs Nuggets to reject Cavaliers' Peyton Watson interest
As much as Friday's Schroder trade is good news for Kuminga, his hopes of landing the near $20 million annual contract he desires could still swing on talks between the Nuggets and Cavaliers over Watson.
The options become very limited for Kuminga if Cleveland lands Watson in a sign-and-trade. After initially declining Kuminga's $24.3 million team option prior to free agency, the Atlanta Hawks all but ruled out his potential return after giving his No. 0 jersey to the recently acquired Lu Dort earlier this week.
The Lakers remain the strongest suitor for Kuminga, but they're unlikely to give him a big contract, or give up the assets to appease the Hawks in a sign-and-trade, if they're not actually bidding against any other team.
The Cavaliers at least now present as a stronger bidder in the wake of the Schroder trade, potentially forcing the Lakers into a move that secures Kuminga his next team on a contract he's comfortable with taking.
