The Golden State Warriors endured a drama-filled restricted free agency with Jonathan Kuminga last offseason, yet it's somehow looking good in comparison to the latest revelation on Jalen Duren's situation with the Detroit Pistons.
Much like Kuminga last year, Duren is willing to stare down the Pistons during his restricted free agency process. The difference here is that the relationship between player and franchise appears far worse than what it was between the Warriors and Kuminga, leaving Detroit with a mess to figure out only weeks away from training camp.

Speaking during Monday's episode of NBA Today, ESPN's Marc J. Spears has revealed the issues between Duren and the Pistons now goes beyond just the financial aspect of his contract situation.
"I just hear that Jalen, it's not about money right now. He feels disrespected," Spears said. "There's a black cloud going into camp. They gotta try to fix it, and I don't know if they can in time."
This is less than ideal when we're talking about a 22-year-old franchise center coming off his first All-Star and All-NBA selection, but it also reflects the problems with restricted free agency that Kuminga and the Warriors experienced last year.
However, as much as there was no shortage of speculation and debate over the relationship between Kuminga and Golden State, there did appear to remain some level of respect as negotiations were taking place. Once the former seventh overall pick did eventually sign a two-year, $48.5 million contract, he entered the season playing well where he earned a starting role and contributed productively over the first two weeks.
The relationship then soured once Kuminga was removed from the starting lineup and Steve Kerr's rotation, leading to a trade request to which general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. took a swipe by claiming there needs to be market demand if a player demands out.

Kuminga was unsurprisingly traded to the Atlanta Hawks in February. As much as there may have been some respect held in contract negotiations last year, his departure from Golden State was always inevitable.
Duren and the Pistons appear headed for the same fate. Even if the former 13th overall pick eventually signs a lucrative contract extension, the relationship may be too far gone to salvage it and have Duren as a long-term part of the franchise moving forward.
That's what makes the resolution to his free agency all the more fascinating. Should Duren sign a nearly $200 million contract, that won't be overly easy to move in today's CBA era. Perhaps he'll have to follow through on the threat of the qualifying offer if he truly wants out of Detroit.
