As the NBA offseason slowly comes to a close, the main thing to watch with the Golden State Warriors is when Stephen Curry signs his contract extension. Many feel it's a foregone conclusion he will reach a deal with the Warriors at some point, even if one could argue the best thing he could do for the franchise is to leave which would trigger a rebuild.
Still, the most likely scenario is that Curry will be back, but that likelihood is made a bit sadder by the reality that this will almost certainly be the last contract Curry signs with the Warriors as a player. If he does agree to a two-year extension, it's hard to see the 38-year-old playing beyond the 2028-29 NBA season.
It would be amazing if he could, but he is going to be in his early forties by the time that contract is up and there’s a good chance retirement will then be soon around the corner. That would make 2029 Curry’s last year in the NBA. It would be his twentieth NBA season and perhaps that’s a goal the two-time MVP has in mind. But it’s a really important reminder that Warriors fans do not have forever to watch the greatest shooter of all time play in blue and gold.

What he has meant to the franchise is hard to articulate, which is why many fans are torn on what his future should be. Some think the Warriors should trade him or let him go in free agency so he can join a team and give himself a chance at another title to boost his legacy further.
Others want the Warriors to do everything in their power to put a team capable of contending around him, though at this point it doesn’t seem like the front office is all that willing to mortgage the future on the last few year’s of Curry’s career.
Then there are some who are fine with Curry having something of a Kobe Bryant model to end his career where the team isn’t very good, but the 12x All-Star can still score a bunch of points and send fans home happy knowing they got to see him cook up a little more magic.
If he signs a two-year extension, that final scenario will likely become Golden State’s reality. It’s not the most satisfying conclusion to his career, but it at least allows Curry to stay with one team for the entirety of his run which is a type of loyalty that is very rare in today’s NBA.
Maybe something surprising happens, but if Curry does indeed do what is expected and sign that two-year extension, that basically starts the clock on what will almost certainly be the final three seasons of his career.
