Stephen Curry has secured his future at the Golden State Warriors, with the franchise superstar signing a two-year, $116 million contract extension on the eve of training camp.
As first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania, Curry's new deal is around $20 million less than the max deal he could have received. The contract sacrifice gives the Warriors a little more financial flexibility heading into next offseason where they could use free agency to build one last contending team around the 38-year-old point guard.

Curry's extension will kick in following this season and comes with a player option in 2028-29, potentially offering the front office even more flexibility during the 2028 offseason as Draymond Green tried to do this past summer when the franchise pursued LeBron James.
Curry could have waited until free agency next year and taken an even bigger paycut -- potentially all the way down to the minimum -- but that would have only invited speculation over his future at a time where the Warriors can't afford to have any unneccessary distractions.
That may have also weighed even more pressure on Golden State's performance as a team this upcoming season. As much as Curry evidently hasn't considered a future elsewhere, perhaps that might have changed if the Warriors failed to make the playoffs for a third time in four seasons.
That's now a hypothetical that won't become reality. Golden State will still be trying desperately to return to the playoffs, but now they can go about their campaign without the constant questioning over Curry's contract status.

Even though they've got another commitment from Curry, the Warriors still have to make the most of it by building one final contender around their greatest ever player. Clearly the 12x All-Star has faith and trust in the front office to make that happen, and far more than what fans do after another underwhelming offseason highlighted by James rejecting the franchise in free agency.
With Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green and Kristaps Porzingis all essentially on expiring contracts (Porzingis has only $3 million guaranteed for 2027-28), all eyes will be on what Golden State can do at February's mid-season trade deadline or in free agency next year.
While over half of the Warriors' previously projected $100 million in cap space is now taken up by Curry's extension, they could still have over $60 million to utilize in what will be a pivotal 12 months for the franchise.
